WHY
WE GOT STARTED WITH ESSENTIAL OILS
My journey with oils began just the same as many of you, as a spectator.
I was a long time follower of Jessica Garvin on her personal account/blog and
when she first mentioned her new adventure with essential oils I was intrigued.
Intrigued as in curious, skeptical and not even close to being a believer. Out
of curiosity, I followed along on her Grapefruit and Gold account and would
casually "like" or connect to a post. However, at the same time, I
also began to reevaluate the products that we had in our house and the tools I
was using daily to survive life and motherhood.
We had long been a subscriber to the Honest Company monthly product deliveries
and I truly believed they were the best we could find and use on our children.
These subscriptions provided us with what I thought was "green"
cleaning products, laundry detergent, baby body wash, lotions, diaper rash
creams, etc. It was not until years later we found out that the while the
company proudly proclaimed their products were absent the harmful chemicals
that we were so purposefully trying to avoid that those claims were in fact
false. I was overwhelmed with guilt upon learning I had unknowingly exposed my
sweet young babes to chemicals known to be harmful and disruptive to their
extremely vulnerable and fragile systems. As such, I was on the hunt for a
new company who had a long term reputation of integrity that I could rely
upon.
Simultaneously, we were also being confronted with more challenges that turned
out to be increasingly difficult bad habits rather than simple phases that
quickly passed . The first, was sleep.
Audrey
was a horrible sleeper right from the start. She hit every single sleep
regression with each scheduled leap. This still seems laughable as she was not
even a fair sleeper in the in between moments. We struggled during each of
these phases and while we had our routines and sleep cues which included bath
times, wind down times, story times, etc, they were simply not enough. Looking
back now, we needed the support we could only find from the aromatic and
topical application of the tried and true calming oils - y'all, there is a
reason why lavender and chamomile have been used on babies, children and adults
for sleep for centuries upon centuries!
In addition to the lack of sleep, we also found ourselves struggling to
stay healthy once Audrey started preschool and I started commuting daily on
public transportation to the wet and cold city of San Francisco. At this time I
was pregnant with Amelia and our immune systems all took
a huge hit. I felt helpless and was wondering if this was just
our life going forward. I wanted so badly as a mom to find a solution that
could help support our family but didn't know where to turn. All I knew, was
that I could not expose a newborn sweet babe to the same hostile germs and feel
like I was doing my best job as her protector.
Speaking of the sweet new babe and concerns, I truly feared the teething process
that would eventually come. Audrey was also the worst teether that I had ever
met. She would get every. single. symptom. you could imagine and then some.
Fevers, nasal congestion, nasal drippage that would cause the upset stomach and
diaper rash, the resulting cough from the drippage, the cough that would then
end up creating more sleepless nights and even projectile vomiting. Yes,
projectile vomiting with every single tooth that was cut. It was brutal.
And for me, that was the final kicker.
After a year of following Jessica's account (which is beautiful! If you have
not yet, make sure to check out @grapefruitandgold), when she mentioned the
